Facebook ads, explained

Your ads can't learn from customers they never see.

When you run a Facebook or Instagram ad, Meta tries to find more people who'll enquire, book or buy. It can only do that if your website tells it who actually did. That's the job of the Meta Pixel. Without one, or with one that's set up wrong, Meta is guessing with your money.

The basics

What is a Pixel?

A Pixel is a small piece of code on your website. It lets Facebook know when someone who saw your ad goes on to do something that matters, like sending an enquiry, making a booking or buying something.

Think of it as asking every customer "how did you hear about us?", automatically, and passing the answer straight back to whoever runs your ads. It's free, and it comes with every Meta ad account.

  1. Someone sees your adScrolling Facebook or Instagram.
  2. They visit your websiteThe Pixel notes the visit.
  3. They enquire, book or buyThe Pixel notes that too.
  4. Meta finds more like themYour next ads go to people who look like real customers.
Where you stand

Which of these sounds like your business?

No Pixel

Meta can only aim for likes, clicks and views, because that's all it can see. You get "reach", not results, and you can't show ads to people who have already visited your website.

Pixel, set up wrong

Meta thinks it's finding customers, but it's learning from bad information, like counting a "lead" every time someone opens the contact page. The numbers look great. The phone doesn't ring.

Set up properly

Pixel plus Conversions API, tracking real enquiries and sales. Meta learns from actual customers, the numbers in Ads Manager match your inbox, and your ads get better over time.

Most businesses we look at sit in one of the first two columns. Both are easy to fix.

The difference

Same budget, very different month

Here's an example of $300 spent two ways. Boosting a post tells Meta to find people who'll like it. A campaign with a working Pixel tells Meta to find people who'll enquire.

Fewer likes, more customers. Meta stopped chasing people who like things and started chasing people who enquire.

Example figures for illustration. Your results will depend on your business, offer and audience.

What you get

What a working Pixel does for your business

Reach people who nearly booked

Someone looked at your function room page last week. Tonight they see your ad while scrolling. That's called retargeting, and it needs a Pixel.

Find more people like your customers

Meta builds an audience that looks like the people who already enquired or bought, so your ads reach strangers who are likely to care. These are called lookalike audiences.

Pay for enquiries, not likes

Tell Meta to aim for bookings, enquiries or sales, instead of whoever is most likely to tap a thumbs-up.

Know what each customer costs

"We spent $300 and got 11 enquiries" is something you can make decisions with. "We got 212 likes" isn't.

Ads that get cheaper over time

The more real results Meta sees, the better it gets at finding the next one. A month of good information beats a year of guessing.

Stop paying to reach people who already bought

Leave out people who've just booked or bought, so your budget goes on new customers instead.

The other half

The Conversions API, in plain English

The Pixel reports from your visitor's web browser. More and more of those reports never arrive, thanks to iPhone privacy settings, ad blockers and browsers that block tracking. When that happens, Meta never hears about the enquiry, and your ad looks like it isn't working.

The Pixel

Reports from the visitor's phone or computer. Quick to set up, and it powers retargeting. But it misses people whose phone or browser blocks it.

The Conversions API

A second, direct line from your website or booking system to Meta. It gets through when the browser doesn't. People often shorten it to "CAPI".

  • Use both. Meta matches the two reports, so nothing gets counted twice.
  • More of your real results get counted, so Meta has more to learn from and your reports are closer to the truth.
  • It can include the ones that finish offline. An enquiry that started on your website and became a sale over the phone can be passed back too.
Not just Facebook

Every big ad platform works the same way

TikTok, LinkedIn, Google and Pinterest all have their own version: a tag on your website plus a direct connection, tracking the same kinds of results for the same reasons. Up here, most local businesses advertise on Facebook and Instagram, so that's what this page focuses on. Get it right there and the rest follow the same pattern.

What good looks like

A Pixel that's set up properly

  • Installed once, with one Pixel that your business owns, not one belonging to an old agency.
  • Tracks the moments that matter: enquiries, bookings, calls and purchases, counted when they actually happen.
  • Sales carry their dollar value in Australian dollars, so Meta can aim for your best customers, not just the most.
  • Conversions API connected alongside it.
  • Your website is verified in Meta Business, and the Pixel respects your cookie banner.

Real examples, tidied up

Signs your Pixel needs a look

If you don't have one yet
  • You boost posts and judge them by likes.
  • You can't show ads to people who've visited your website.
  • Ads Manager only shows reach and clicks, never enquiries.
If you already have one
  • The leads in Ads Manager don't match your real enquiries.
  • Nobody's sure who installed it, or who owns it.
  • Meta's Events Manager is showing warnings.
  • Your ads were switched to "landing page views" because conversions "weren't working".

How we help

What a Toolproof Pixel check covers

  1. Inspect

Do you have a Pixel? Is it yours? What is it actually counting? We'll check your website, Ads Manager and Events Manager.

  2. Set up or fix

Install it from scratch, or fix the events and duplicates. Then connect the Conversions API and make it respect your cookie banner.

  3. Prove

For the next month, we compare Meta's numbers with your real enquiries and sales, so you know you can trust them.

No Pixel, or not sure about yours?

Either way, one visit tells you where you stand and what it'll take to get your ads learning from real customers.
